The Power of Wisdom

The beginning of wisdom is this:

Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.

Prov 4:7(ESV)

Wisdom, aside from worshipping God,  is one the most important elements our lives. “…whatever you get, get insight.”  King

Solomon gives us an honest encouragement to the study of true religion and Godliness. Throughout the Book of Proverbs and especially in the preceding chapters we see that wisdom is what makes us who we are and how we act, whether or not we act in a manner that projects and beautifies our Godly devotion. He instructs his children just as his father instructed him. He says that he will give them good doctrine. This is important because not all doctrine is good doctrine. (See 2Tim 4:3,4)  This is why we must get wisdom and with all we get, get understanding. With wisdom and understanding we can gain knowledge of our true, living God.

The Power of Wisdom         (listen)

“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you,  making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.  Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech, who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways. So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words, who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God;  for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life. So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.” (Prov 2:1-22 ESV)

*True wisdom is a gift from God to those who ask for it (Job 28:12-28; Prov 3:13-18; Rom 1:22; Rom 16:27; 1Co 1:17-21; 1Co 2:6-8; Jas 1:5). To be “foolish” is to be godless (Ps 14:1)

The secular definition of  wisdom is: insight, common sense (according to dictionary .com) But is wisdom really common sense? In 1 Cor 2:8 we see that there is a secret hidden wisdom of God. So we see there is common sense among all of God’s living creations, however,  there is a greater wisdom that in which is decreed by God for the believers. The letter to the Corinth’s was addressed to the those called to be saints. As we know a saint is a holy being or a holy person as by canonization. A saint is also an angel and thus will reside amongst the spirit realm in God’s Kingdom in Heaven to be a priest over God’s Kingdom on earth. Revelation 20:6 states: “Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.”  (ESV)

For those of us (the meek) we must get our wisdom by studying, and studying good doctrine, The Bible. Nothing can replace God’s Word as taught to us through God’s prophet’s and teachers that wrote The Holy Scriptures on His behalf. (2 Peter 1:21) Our study of the word must not allow man’s doctrine’s to pervert the truth of God’s Holy Words, which are meant to direct our paths and our worshipping of Him.

It is important that we study properly at a time that we will not be disturbed. Good study habits also include; having a schedule, having a study partner, using a bible dictionary and concordance, taking notes and studying a single subject at a time. It can take hours just to study one topic. If you are fortunate to have a computer you can utilize online bibles to help you look up keywords. Nothing replaces a printed proper edition of the bible. The King James Version, I have found, is an excellent resource to utilize in checking certain facts because of it’s age. It was printed originally I believe in 1643 and thus has not changed. There is The New King James which has easier reading and it is based on America’s English language. However, some of the facts changed in it for instance: God’s name is not in there in the New edition. King Solomon wrote: “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.”  Prov 22:1(ESV)  Moses wrote God’s commandment; “You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.” Lev 19:12 (ESV) I always call upon our Lord by name because I have a personal relationship with him. How close of a relationship could it be without us knowing each others name? He has a name for each of the stars. Why? Is having a name that important? Perhaps our next study will be on the importance of a name and what is God’s name?

Nothing is more important when studying than beginning with a prayer to our Father in Heaven, giving thanks and asking for the wisdom and understanding to learn the very knowledge of Him.

May God bless you.
