Elevate Your Prayers Through Biblical Examples

King David

Through Bible Study we can learn how our ancestor’s worshipped God and prayed for His blessings, help and guidance.  While Jesus provided us with our model prayer (Matthew 6:9), we can also learn from the beginning of time how they prayed as well but we must keep in mind what Jesus taught us.

Elevate Your Prayers Through Biblical Examples (con’t)

Jesus told us to “Pray this way” and he starts with the addressing of God in a manner that displays true respect and as being  the child of God that we are; “Our Father whom art in heaven.” Then we show the respect for his name in stating that his name is Holy; “Hallowed be thy name.” Next Jesus has us confessing our belief and hope in the gift in which God will bring to all those that fear him and believe in His Son; “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  This refers to the new heavens and new earth after this system of things will be destroyed (Is 65:17-25).  Then Jesus has us ask for; “Our daily bread,” which is what God has agreed to do for all his creations (ie: Matt 6:25-34). God also provides us daily with His words, knowledge, wisdom and understanding  in which for us to follow.  Next we see the importance of forgiveness, first we ask for it and then we give it, for how could we be forgiven by God if we cannot forgive those that have harmed us (Matt 6:15); ” And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Matt 6:12 (KJV) Then we ask for guidance; ” And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Matt 6:13 (KJV) Then we conclude with: “Amen,” this simply means truth, faithful, or firm.

I touch on each of these topics and some in my prayers. In addition I have used other examples as well especially from King David. The most part of the Book of Psalms was written by King David and he has in there many of his prayers ad meditations. When reading his verses you can feel the love that David has in his heart for God, it is know wonder why God had so much love for him. King David praised and worshipped God incessantly. David turned to God for everything, well almost. While David did sin, God forgave him for his transgressions of even adultery and murder. It’s is amazing what a good prayer can get you.

Prayers Must Be Heartfelt

In order for God to hear your prayer it must come from your heart in order to be heard. Take for instance the heartfelt prayers offered up by King Soloman in 1 Kings 8. Study Soloman’s prayer and see how he acknowledges that God alone sees the heart (1Ki 8:38,39). The same prayer shows that there is hope for a person that returns to God with all his heart. If an enemy were to capture any of God’s people, their pleas would be heard if their heart was complete (1Ki 8:48, 58, 61).   So of course our heart should be in our prayers. That is why I am so into building and maintaining a personal relationship with God. He is not just the spirit that I pray and bow to, He is a close and personal friend that I can go to for any reason at any time. Even when I get out of the car and walk into a store, I talk to Him. I may say a quick prayer or I may tell Him what is on my mind for what I am about to do. I may even just tell Him how I am feeling at that moment or even tell Him my events of the day. Create a relationship with God, He will reciprocate your love for Him and He will answer your prayers that are of accord to his will, in His time.

Scriptures:

Matt 6:9-13(ASV)

“After this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Isaiah 65:17-25(NLT)

"Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth, and no one will even think about the old ones anymore.18 Be glad; rejoice forever in my creation! And look! I will create Jerusalem as a place of happiness. Her people will be a source of joy.19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem and delight in my people. And the sound of weeping and crying will be heard in it no more.
20 "No longer will babies die when only a few days old. No longer will adults die before they have lived a full life. No longer will people be considered old at one hundred! Only the cursed will die that young!21 In those days people will live in the houses they build and eat the fruit of their own vineyards.22 Unlike the past, invaders will not take their houses and confiscate their vineyards. For my people will live as long as trees, and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard-won gains.23 They will not work in vain, and their children will not be doomed to misfortune. For they are people blessed by the Lord, and their children, too, will be blessed.24 I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together. The lion will eat hay like a cow. But the snakes will eat dust. In those days no one will be hurt or destroyed on my holy mountain. I, the Lord, have spoken!"

Matt 6:25-34(KJV)

”Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27  Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. “

1 Kings 8:38-39(ESV)

“…whatever prayer, whatever plea is made by any man or by all your people Israel, each knowing the affliction of his own heart and stretching out his hands toward this house, 39 then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways” ( for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind)

1 Kings 8:48(ESV)

“….if they repent with all their mind and with all their heart in the land of their enemies, who carried them captive, and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city that you have chosen, and the house that I have built for your name, …”

1 Kings 8:58(ESV)

“…that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his rules, which he commanded our fathers.”

1 Kings 8:61(ESV)

” Let your heart therefore be wholly true to the Lord our God, walking in his statutes and keeping his commandments, as at this day.”

    Scriptures

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who a sows discord among brothers. - Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV
